자국 (jaguk): Mark · Trace · Scar · Footprint — One Korean Sound, Four Meanings
Something passes, and it leaves a 자국 (jaguk).
Press your hand to a fogged window — a 자국. A wound heals but never fully disappears — a 자국. Walk across wet sand — a trail of 자국. One pure native Korean word, no Hanja, for everything the world keeps after the thing itself is gone. It is Korean's word for the past tense of touch.

① MARK — 자국
The first 자국 (jaguk) is the plain mark left when one thing presses or touches another.
- 손자국 (son-jaguk) — a handprint
- 물자국 (mul-jaguk) — a water mark
- 자국을 내다 (jaguk-eul nae-da) — to leave a mark
Wherever contact leaves a visible sign, that sign is a 자국.
② TRACE — 자국
Widened in time, 자국 (jaguk) becomes the trace that proves something was once here — the sign that remains after the thing is gone.
- 자국이 남다 (jaguk-i nam-da) — a trace remains
- the ring a cup left on a table, the pale rectangle where a picture hung for years
This is the 자국 of memory and evidence. Long after the object leaves, its 자국 testifies that it was real.
③ SCAR — 자국
On the body, 자국 (jaguk) is the scar — the mark a wound leaves after it heals.
- 상처 자국 (sang-cheo jaguk) — a scar
- 흉터 자국 (hyung-teo jaguk) — a scar mark
- 수술 자국 (su-sul jaguk) — a surgical scar
The skin closes, but the 자국 stays. It is the body's own memory of what once happened to it.
④ FOOTPRINT — 자국
Underfoot, 자국 (jaguk) is the footprint:
- 발자국 (bal-jaguk) — a footprint (발 foot + 자국)
- 눈 위의 발자국 (nun wi-ui bal-jaguk) — footprints on the snow
Two beautiful side-notes here:
🐗 For an animal's tracks, Korean has a separate word — 자귀 (jagwi). A person leaves 발자국; a wild boar leaves 자귀.
👣 And 발자취 (bal-ja-chwi) lifts the footprint into metaphor — not the print in the ground, but "the path one has walked," a life's course. 역사의 발자취 (yeoksa-ui bal-ja-chwi) — "the footsteps of history."
🎯 One Picture, Four Meanings
From mark → trace → scar → footprint, 자국 is always the same thing: the shape left behind after contact.
A hand on glass. A wound on skin. A foot on snow. A life on history. Each leaves its 자국.
